Carrière


Clément Mao – Takacs est l’une des étoiles montantes de la nouvelle génération de chefs d’orchestre. En tant que chef invité, il a dirigé le Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Odense Symphony, Orchestre des Pays de La Loire, Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, Orchestre de Paris, Festival Orchestra of Sofia, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, ICE Ensemble et Bit 20 Bergen.

Direction artistique


En 2012, il fonde Secession Orchestra, dont il est à la fois le directeur artistique et musical. Clément Mao – Takacs est également le créateur et le directeur artistique des festivals INTERVALLES (Île-de-France) et TERRAQUÉ (Carnac, Morbihan). Il codirige avec le metteur en scène Aleksi Barrière la compagnie La Chambre aux échos (théâtre musical et opéra de chambre).

Répertoire


Son répertoire très large va de la musique ancienne à la création contemporaine. Sa connaissance des styles et ses qualités techniques lui permettent de diriger avec la même aisance le répertoire symphonique que le répertoire lyrique.

Enregistrements


Les enregistrements de Clément Mao – Takacs incluent Adieu pour Crystal Classics de Stockhausen, un disque de la musique de Jacques Ibert pour Timpani (récompensé de « 5 diapasons » par le magazine DIAPASON), la Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre avec SECESSION ORCHESTRA et Jonas Vitaud (piano) pour Mirare. En 2019 est sorti son CD consacré à la musique de Saariaho avec Oslo Philharmonic (BIS Records), récemment nominé au Spelleman Prisen et aux Grammy Awards.

Il se produit également comme pianiste et compositeur. ​​Chercheur en littérature comparée et arts du spectacle, il publie régulièrement textes et articles (éditions Actes Sud, Gallimard, CNRS), intervient dans des émissions de radios et collabore à des expositions.

Formation


Il est diplômé du Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris et de l’Accademia Chigiana de Sienne et a reçu le Prix « Jeune Talent » de la Fondation del Duca.

Career


“Clément Mao–Takacs is a young conductor with daring original vision, and who defends the rare repertoires from yesterday and today alike, always curating intelligent programmes” (Les Échos). Clément recently conducted the Copenhagen Philharmonic, Olso Philharmonic and Stavanger Symphony in a Wagner/Saariaho program he designed. He also conducted the Odense Symphony in Rofelt’s Cello Concerto and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. In France, he was invited to conduct the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (Haydn, Saariaho and Mendelssohn), Orchestre de Paris (Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde; Poulenc’s Les Animaux Modèles), Orchestre de Bretagne (Mendelssohn, Mozart, Hosokawa, Debussy).

Artistic direction


An integral part of his artistic life is the Paris based Secession Orchestra he founded in 2011, of which he is both Artistic and Musical Director. He also created and is Artistic Director of the festivals INTERVALLES in Paris and TERRAQUÉ in Carnac, Brittany. With stage director Aleksi Barrière he founded and leads the collective La Chambre aux échos, working on musical theatre and chamber opera. For their upcoming project they will join forces with the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki producing ‘Between’ with works by Saariaho, and two world premieres by Vestergard and Hilli.

Upcoming highlights include his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (2021) his debut with the San Francisco Opera (2024) and his return to Finland with Finnish National Opera and the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra (2022).

Recordings


Clément Mao-Takacs’s further recordings include Stockhausen’s Adieu for Crystal Classics, a disc of Jacques Ibert’s music for Timpani (awarded ‘5 diapasons’ by DIAPASON magazine) and Debussy “Fantaisie for piano and orchestra“ with the Secession Orchestra (Mirare). Upcoming releases include music by Stravinsky, Saariaho, Shostakovich and Berg. His CD with Oslo Philharmonic was lauded for its expressivity and virtuosity and nominated for a Spellemann Award, it was BBC Music Magazine’s Concerto Choice and “could scarcely be bettered” (Gramophone). It has also been shortlisted for the 2021 Grammy awards.

Repertoire


His repertoire is wide, from ancient to contemporary music. Since 2013, he has performed most of the works by Kaija Saariaho, including many premieres. He conducted the symphonic repertoire as well as operas.

Education


He graduated from the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and the Accademia Chigiana in Sienna, and was awarded the Prix « Jeune Talent » by the Fondation del Duca (Institut de France / Académie des Beaux-Arts).

Clément Mao – Takacs is also a pianist (solo and chamber music) and a composer. He is also a researcher in Comparative Literature and Performing Arts; he regularly publishes texts and articles (Editions Actes Sud, Gallimard, CNRS), talks in radio programs, gives lectures and collaborates in exhibitions.
